Processing

As the Steelhead program was being developed and production was low, the processing of our fish was contracted out to various processors in Vancouver Island and Vancouver. However, as production increased, the need to establish in-house processing became clear. After refitting one of our existing buildings in Lang Bay, Powell River and receiving all appropriate permitting, our own plant opened in June, 2006. At first, we only handled primary processing, working with 12 people two days a week, and processing 5,000 - 10,000 dressed pounds (DHOn).

In the meantime, the secondary processing (filleting) was still being contracted out to a Vancouver plant, but with production continuing to increase over the next few years and averaging 20,000 - 30,000 lbs/week, it was only a matter of time before we transferred the production and employment to Powell River. In February of 2011, West Coast established secondary processing, employing 17-25 people, working 4-5 days a week. Today, we process between 30,000 - 40,000 lbs a week.
